ROI & CONSUMER BEHAVIOR

The numbers behind "it's hard to prove ROI."

ROI is the hardest thing to pin down in social listening, not because the impact isn't real, but because it shows up scattered across reputation, retention, and campaigns that never get compared side by side. Put the outcome data next to the consumer behavior data, and the shape of the payoff gets a lot clearer.

Where teams say the value actually shows up

Sprout Social's 2026 Social Intelligence Report found that 74% of organizations say social intelligence delivers insights faster than traditional research, but only 36% say it informs decisions in areas like product development or customer experience. The value shows up first in marketing, and has to be carried to the rest of the business.

Carrying it is easier when mentions arrive already sorted. That's how Social Line is built: brand mentions and reputation tracked as a keyword with an automatic sentiment score, competitors tracked the same way and grouped for side-by-side comparison, and product feedback matched against categories like bug report, feature request, praise, and complaint so it arrives sorted instead of as a flat feed.

Consumers are already doing this without waiting for brands

61% of consumers discovered a new brand or product on social media in the past 12 months, and 83% see the influencers and creators they follow as trusted sources of information, according to Deloitte Digital's State of Social Research 2025. Generational shift is part of why: 39% of 18-24-year-olds now say social media is their main news source, up from 21% in 2015, according to the Reuters Institute.

The discovery and trust-building is happening in public, whether or not a brand is tracking it. Tracking your own name and your competitors' as keywords is what turns that public conversation into something visible, instead of something you find out about secondhand.

The real signal is in what people don't say to you

Most of what happens to a brand's reputation never reaches the brand directly. Ogilvy's 2026 APAC Believability Index found that 93% of consumers who lose belief in a brand or organization disengage silently rather than complaining. The warning signs are in public posts, questions, and comparisons, not in the support inbox.

That's the case for reading the quiet, neutral mentions too, not just the loud complaints. Auto-categorizing every mention, not only the ones that look urgent, is why that bucket is worth scoring in the first place, and it's why Social Line runs sentiment and category matching on everything it tracks, not just the mentions that already look like a complaint.
