What is social listening?
By Nilay Baranwal, Co-founder, Social Line · September 24, 2026
DEFINITION
Social listening is the practice of tracking public conversations on social media about a brand, product, competitor, or topic, and analyzing them for sentiment, volume, and recurring themes so a team can act on what people are actually saying. It goes beyond reading individual posts: the point is to see patterns across many mentions and decide what to do about them.
HOW IT WORKS
Step by step
- 01
Choose what to track
Pick the keywords that matter: your brand and product names, competitors, campaign hashtags, or category terms. Boolean rules (require this word, exclude that one) keep the results relevant.
- 02
Collect public mentions
A listening tool searches the platforms you care about for public posts that match, on a schedule, so new mentions keep arriving without anyone searching by hand.
- 03
Score and sort them
Each mention is classified for sentiment (positive, neutral, or negative) and ranked by how many people it could reach, so the posts that matter most rise to the top.
- 04
Look for patterns
Volume, sentiment, and reach over time show whether a launch landed, whether complaints are growing, or how you compare with a competitor.
- 05
Act on it
Reply to a customer, send a bug report to the product team, flag a spreading complaint, or change a campaign. Listening only pays off when someone does something with it.
COMPARED
Social listening vs. social monitoring vs. sentiment analysis
| Term | Question it answers | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Social monitoring | What did people just say about us? | Individual mentions, handled one at a time: reply, escalate, or ignore. |
| Social listening | What are people saying overall, and what should we do? | Patterns across many mentions: sentiment and volume trends, recurring themes, competitor comparisons. |
| Sentiment analysis | Is this post positive, neutral, or negative? | A label on each piece of text. It's one input to social listening, not the whole practice. |
| Brand monitoring | Where is our brand being mentioned? | Mentions of your own brand specifically. Social listening also covers competitors and topics. |
What teams use social listening for
Reputation management: catching negative posts with real reach before they spread, and tracking whether sentiment recovers afterwards.
Competitive analysis: tracking competitors as keywords, so you see their launches, complaints, and share of conversation next to your own.
Product feedback: finding bug reports and feature requests people post publicly but never send to support.
Campaign tracking: measuring mention volume and sentiment around a launch or hashtag while it's running, not weeks later.
Doing it by hand versus with a tool
Searching each platform's own search bar and pasting results into a spreadsheet works for a handful of mentions. It stops working once there are several platforms, several keywords, or a team: nothing is scored, nothing is deduplicated, and nobody knows which posts someone else already handled.
A listening tool automates the collection and scoring, keeps history so trends are visible, and gives a team shared status on each mention.
HOW SOCIAL LINE DOES IT
- Tracks keywords across Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Reddit, Threads, and TikTok.
- Runs each keyword on a schedule you choose, from every 5 minutes to once a day (every 12 hours by default). A new keyword's first results arrive in about two minutes.
- Labels every mention positive, neutral, or negative, and estimates its reach.
- Puts open negative mentions in a Needs Attention queue, ranked by reach at risk.
- Lets a team mark each mention open, follow up, done, or irrelevant, and sort mentions into its own categories.
- Starts at $15/mo billed annually, with a 14-day free trial and no credit card.
WHAT IT DOESN'T DO
- Social Line tracks social platforms only. It doesn't cover news sites, blogs, podcasts, or review sites.
- It only sees public posts. Private groups, DMs, and anything behind a login are out of reach for any listening tool.
- It doesn't post, reply, or message on your behalf. Any response happens from your own account.
FAQ
Common questions
What is social listening in simple terms?
Keeping track of what people say publicly on social media about your brand, competitors, or topics you care about, and looking at the overall picture (sentiment, volume, themes) rather than one post at a time.
What's the difference between social listening and social monitoring?
Monitoring deals with individual mentions as they come in, like replying to a complaint. Listening looks across many mentions for patterns and trends, and uses them to make decisions. Most teams do both, and most tools support both.
Is social listening legal?
Tracking public posts is standard practice. Social listening tools only collect content that is already publicly visible; they don't access private accounts, groups, or messages.
Which platforms does social listening cover?
It depends on the tool. Social Line covers Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Reddit, Threads, and TikTok. Other tools add news, blogs, forums, podcasts, or review sites.
How much does a social listening tool cost?
Prices range from free manual methods to enterprise contracts. Social Line starts at $15/mo billed annually; dated price comparisons with other tools are on the alternatives page.
